The book package includes everything that makes up the physical book, including trim size, jacket treatment, case, paper specification, binding and type and color of ink. Publishers become known for a certain type of package. Artisan Books, a division of Workman Publishing, specializes in coffee-table books. Its books are as famous for their designs as they are for their authors. The bestselling French Laundry Cookbook, written by Thomas Keller and photographed by Deborah Jones, was published in 1999 and set a new standard in cookbook design. Measuring 11.3 × 11.3 inches and more than an inch thick, The French Laundry Cookbook was designed by Level Inc. from Calistoga, California, and went on to win an International Association of Culinary Professionals award for Best Design. Workman Publishing, Artisan’s parent company, made its reputation (and sales) almost exclusively because of its book designs. Exclusively paperback, the Workman Cookbooks (the mega bestselling The Silver Palate Cookbook being one of the first) are known for very information-dense layouts inspired by magazine publishers, with large amounts of illustrations and a heavy reliance on sidebars to convey information not directly stated in the text itself. If you sell a cookbook to Workman, you will have a good idea what your book will look like as its signature design varies little. Page Street Publishing has also established a signature look—original trade paperbacks with rich color photographs and energetic type treatments, most priced under $25.
